Honesty with Yourself is the First Key to an Abundant Life

(Excerpted from Only Read the Fine Print the book)

A wise man once said that honesty is the first key to an abundant life. Personally, I think that honesty with yourself is the first key to an abundant life. If you aren't honest with yourself, you create internal conflict - an internal battle about who you are, what you want, what you should do, what is right, what is wrong. Everything comes into question. And nothing feels good.

Being honest with yourself can be difficult. Sometimes what you really want isn't the same as what your family, friends, or society wants. Being different is hard.

Sometimes what you really want contradicts what you've said or done in the past. Admitting that you were wrong is hard.

Sometimes what you really want is just plain different than what you used to want. Accepting change is hard.

Even so, what you think or feel or want is ok, regardless of what everyone else thinks. Understanding that is the first step to accepting your thoughts and feelings.

To be clear, this is not an endorsement of anarchy. Just because you want something doesn't mean you should get it. Wanting or thinking or feeling something is ok, but doing something that would harm someone else is never ok. Let's be honest about that too.

But if you want something (or don't want something), you have to be honest with yourself about that. If you want something but don't want to work for it, you have to be honest with yourself about that. (By the way, if you want something but don't want to work for it, you don't really want it that bad... be honest with yourself about that too.) Don't beat yourself up about it... accept it and move on. You'll never get anywhere if you spend all your time going 'round and 'round in circles fighting your own emotions.
